The Opportunity
We are seeking a dynamic leader to join the ship’s management team as Senior Master. This is a unique opportunity to serve on one of BC Ferries’ live-aboard vessels, supporting remote Northern communities in British Columbia.
The role
As a Senior Master, you are responsible for the overall management of the vessel and its crew, with responsibilities including:
- Managing and leading the shipboard management team
- Overseeing all Watches and ensuring consistency for the safe and efficient navigation of the vessel between ports and ensuring strong bridge teams
- Overseeing a comprehensive vessel maintenance program, including cleaning, monitoring, and replacement of safety and fire equipment, bridge equipment, stores, publications, and certification
- Ensuring a high standard of Customer Service, resolving and providing guidance on the resolution of customer and employee problems, complaints, and grievances
- Ensuing that all written policies and procedures are kept current and updated in the VSM/eFleet
- Ensuring that route performance records for the vessel’s operation are in accordance with regulatory, certification and audit requirements
- Coordinating the effective performance of the vessel and its personnel in providing safe, efficient, economic, and timely transport of passengers and vehicles
Serves as company management representative establishing and maintaining a safe, secure and professional work environment:
- Directing the Shipboard Management Teams in the implementation of performance and operational improvements
- Ensuring safe practices in vessel operation in accordance with the Company Safety Management System and that employee work practices meet WCB standards; regularly conducts emergency drills in passenger safety and control
- Working towards the Company goal of improving safety in all aspects of operations and taking proactive steps to reduce worksite accidents, injuries, and time lost from work
- Fulfils role and responsibilities as the Vessel Security Officer
- Ensuring employee training programs in all phases of vessel operation and that crew members are familiar with policies and procedures
- Overseeing and ensuring the completion of annual performance appraisals for deck department employees
What you bring to the team
Education/Academic Requirements:
- Master, Near Coastal Certificate of Competency
- Proficient in the Microsoft Suite of computer programs
- Training in business and leadership would be an asset
Work Experience Requirements:
- Experience as a master of a large vessel
- Successful BC Ferries route and vessel clearance
Competency Requirements:
- Strong leadership demonstrated through reliable performance and positive interaction with others in the company
- An agent of change who is driven to ensure outstanding results
- Ability to identify and analyse business improvement opportunities that increase shareholder value
- Customer Service driven individual
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills - necessary for leading and motivating diverse workforce

Additional information
The target salary range: $144,700-$180,900 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
