The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Senior Technical Analyst, Networks to help design, operate, and continuously improve a complex, high-availability network that keeps our operations running safely and efficiently.

The Role

Reporting to the Manager, Network Services, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:

  • Leading, mentoring and supporting Network team members;
  • Providing technical expertise in network performance management, capacity planning, and network administration;
  • Ensuring shipboard data is routed through the network in an efficient and secure manner;
  • Providing recommendations on overall network design and architecture;
  • Collaborating with the Technology Services team to ensure overall network stability and performance;
  • Ensuring the functionality, reliability, and stability of systems by performing backup and recovery, disaster recovery, job scheduling, performance monitoring and tuning, and capacity monitoring;
  • Developing and documenting procedures to maintain security, confidentiality, and industry best practices within the BC Ferries environment;
  • Facilitating Change Management by liaising with the Change Manager and customers on configuration, testing, implementation, and post-implementation review of changes and enhancements;
  • Acting as Project Manager for small to medium-sized projects and serving as liaison between project sponsors and users;
  • Working independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple project commitments;
  • Collaborating with first-tier support staff and third-party vendors to resolve system issues and supporting server-related functions;
  • Evaluating emerging technologies and recommending appropriate technical solutions;
  • Providing orientation, guidance, and informal training to team members;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned from time to time;

What you bring to the team

Education & Certifications

  • Degree or diploma in Computer Systems or a related IT discipline from a recognized college or technical institution
  • Cisco CCNA or CCNP certification considered an asset
  • ITIL and/or COBIT training considered an asset 

Experience

  • 5–7 years of experience building and supporting complex network environments
  • 5–7 years of experience with network security and firewall technologies
  • 3–5 years of experience with software-defined networking concepts
  • 3–5 years of experience with cloud-based and hybrid networking
  • 3-5 years of experience supporting enterprise wireless data network

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expert knowledge to efficiently install and maintain network communications equipment and cabling, including diagnosing the correcting complex technical problems
  • Expert knowledge of routing and switching in a complex network environment
  • An excellent understanding of wireless data networks and their associated protocols
  • Strong knowledge of VoIP communications systems
  • Strong knowledge of various network security technologies including: Intrusion Prevention/Detection, VPN, Firewalls, and Next-Generation Firewalls
  • Knowledge of SD-WAN design, deployment, and support in an enterprise environment.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based networking technologies, including the design, implementation, and support of networking solutions within Microsoft Azure environments.
  • Working knowledge of Active Directory, Group policy and DFS
  • Ability to identify and serve internal and external customers consistently, achieving a high level of customer satisfaction through assessing needs, establishing goals and resolving issues
  • Ability to identify and proactive resolve network/server problems using central managed tools sets
  • Must have high integrity and maintain confidentiality of data and information (past, current and future business plans)
  • Ability to effectively establish on-going working relationships with customers
  • Ability to work cooperatively within diverse teams
  • Strong team orientation

Additional information 

The salary for this bargaining unit position is $7,648 per month.
