DOCK REPAIRER

Nanaimo

 

The opportunity 

We are seeking a Dock Repairer to join our team in Nanaimo. In this position you will repair and maintain all BC Ferries assets including marine structures, buildings, grounds, equipment and vessels.  

 

Reporting to the Trades Supervisor, Dock Repairers are responsible for: 

  

  • Rigging and hoisting equipment, materials, and ramp components with crane; inspecting and conducting a pre-trip inspection of the truck daily; and traveling to off-site locations 
  • Performing marine structure repairs to mechanical and structural components of wing walls, dolphins, walkways, and ramps including fenders, support systems, and pad facings 
  • Performing preventive maintenance service; inspecting, testing, and recording conditions including troubleshooting of equipment malfunctions and breakdowns; performing oil analysis and changes, replacing filters, adjusting valve settings, replacing or repairing tubes and hoses, lubricating gear boxes, pumps, sheaves, pulleys, cables, and bearings 
  • Assisting other trades on repair work of common equipment 
  • Inspecting and documenting the mechanical and structural components of ramp hoist systems and maintaining, repairing, and replacing associated rigging and hoisting gear 
  • Maintaining and repairing tools and equipment; splicing ropes and cables; rebuilding hoist blocks, maintaining air and power tools; and maintaining vehicles 
  • Providing a "lead hand" role to new employees and helpers, including input into performance assessment 
  • Providing orientation, guidance and informal training to other employees 

 

What you bring to the team 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships 
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks to relevant standards with minimal supervision 
  • Ability to anticipate and analyze problems and initiate appropriate solutions 
  • Ability to research, accurately interpret and apply trades reference materials 
  • Ability to safely use oxygen/acetylene equipment in the workplace 
  • Ability to safely rig a variety of equipment for hoisting 
  • Ability to splice wire rope correctly for a given application 
  • Strong Team orientation 
  • High level of self-motivation and initiative 
  • Ability to work well under pressure 

 

Education: 

  • Piledriver and Bridgeworker Red Seal 
  • Class 3 Drivers license, with air endorsement 
  • Occupational First aid, and Forklift Operator Certificate are an asset 
  • Valid Crane Operator certificate is considered an asset 

 

Other: 

  • Ability to safely meet physical demands of the job including working at heights over water and structures 
  • May be operationally required to obtain Crane Operator certification at a future date
