PAINTER 

Nanaimo Maintenance Yard 

4-6 Month Term Certain

 

The Opportunity 

We’re looking for a skilled Painter who is a collaborative team player and confident self-starter with strong technical and interpersonal abilities. 

 

In this role, you will perform protective and decorative coating applications, prepare surfaces and maintaining the painting of marine structures, terminal buildings, offices and vessels. You will work with a variety of tools, materials, and techniques while coordinating with other trades and contractors. 

 

This is an opportunity to contribute to complex, safety-critical infrastructure in a dynamic marine environment. 

 

The Role 

Reporting to the Trades Supervisor, you perform the following duties: 

 

  • Performing preparatory work on buildings, marine structures, vessels and equipment by scraping, chipping, and sanding or sandblasting surfaces; using mechanical or chemical means, operating hand tools; and masking to protect areas. 
  • Painting buildings, marine structures, vessels and equipment using a variety of paint products and equipment including brushes, rollers, air spray, and airless spray. 
  • Pre-planning for the job; reading plans and drawings to determine painting specifications; obtaining all required equipment; building and scaffolding and staging; operating scissor-lift and swing staging; mixing materials; cleaning-up and putting materials and supplies away. 
  • Providing a “lead hand” role for new employees, apprentices, etc., including input for performance assessment. 
  • Performing additional duties including travelling to work locations; drywall preparation; operating equipment; cleaning parts; papering; preparing and refinishing corporation assets; making corporate signs; and assisting other trades in the performance of their work, where appropriate. 

 

What you bring to the team 

You hold a Red Seal Painter and Decorator, as well as a minimum 3 years’ related experience, with at least 3 year Painting experience, preferably in the marine industryA valid BC driver’s licence is required as moderate travel throughout the fleet is required.
