BC Ferries is embarking on a bold, multi-year transformation of our technology and the way we work. This evolution is focused on strengthening the experience for both our customers and employees, while ensuring we continue to deliver safe, reliable, and affordable service—now and into the future.

As our vessels and terminals become increasingly connected, and we adopt modern platforms powered by advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, we’re looking for forward-thinking leaders who are excited by what’s possible. Leaders who not only embrace innovation, but who also know how to build, inspire, and empower teams to turn vision into reality.

If you thrive in complex, large-scale environments, enjoy driving enterprise-wide transformation, and are comfortable operating at the intersection of business strategy and technology delivery, this could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Join us and play a meaningful role in shaping the future of coastal transportation—where the challenge is significant and the impact is lasting.

The Opportunity

At BC Ferries, we connect coastal communities and support essential travel across British Columbia. Behind every safe and reliable sailing is a strong, resilient technology foundation; and that’s where you come in.

We’re looking for a Manager, Infrastructure to lead a high-performing team and shape the future of our enterprise infrastructure across both on-premise and cloud environments.

As Manager, Infrastructure, you’ll combine technical depth with strategic leadership to ensure the reliability, performance, and evolution of our core systems. You’ll lead a team of ~10 Infrastructure Specialists across Windows, Unix, storage, and power systems, while driving modernization, stability, and operational excellence across our data centres, terminals, and vessels.

This is a role for someone who thrives at the intersection of people leadership, architecture, and operational delivery.

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Manager, IT Operations & Infrastructure, this role is integral to the achievement of company objectives, and you contribute value through key areas of oversight such as:

  • Managing and guiding Infrastructure Specialists focusing on the installation, configuration, and monitoring of server and storage systems across on-premise and cloud-based virtualized environments;
  • Establishing and fostering a highly motivated, committed, and flexible workforce through mentoring, leadership, and professional guidance;
  • Liaising with Enterprise and Solution Architects on infrastructure direction, standards, and trends;
  • Ensuring accurate and timely communication of information to Senior Management to support tactical and strategic decision-making;
  • Developing and maintaining overall strategic technology direction and standards for server and storage hardware;
  • Directing security and patch management processes for server environments;
  • Developing and maintaining departmental policies and procedures;
  • Contributing to the resolution of business problems by participating in regular meetings with business areas and ensuring implementation of resulting action plans;
  • Facilitating change management related to the configuration, testing, implementation, and post-implementation review of modifications and enhancements;
  • Proactively ensuring the functionality, reliability, and stability of systems through effective backup and recovery, disaster recovery, job scheduling, performance monitoring and tuning, and capacity planning;
  • Providing high-level strategic technical architecture guidance for the design and maintenance of storage and physical and virtual server infrastructure across on-premise and cloud environments;
  • Recommending and deploying new products and tools or enhancing existing tools;
  • Managing primary and backup data centres and all shore- and vessel-based server rooms across the fleet;
  • Developing and managing operating and capital projects, including technology refresh initiatives;
  • Resolving high-priority and complex customer issues and recommending appropriate strategies for data centre environments;
  • Supporting the Technology Services budget by recommending server, storage, and security requirements;

What you bring to the team

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems or an IT related discipline from a recognized college or technical school and/or significant professional experience in Information Technology
  • 4+ years of experience building, maintaining, and supporting server environments in an Information Technology setting, including Windows and Linux platforms (required)
  • 4+ years of experience designing, building, and managing enterprise-level systems, including virtual server environments and system management tools (preferred)
  • 4+ years of experience supporting storage infrastructure, including SAN environments (preferred)
  • 4+ years of experience leading and motivating diverse technical teams (preferred)
  • 1+ year of experience migrating on-premise workloads to cloud environments (required)
