Victoria 

 

The Opportunity 

Join a growing in-house legal team at BC Ferries as Senior Regulatory Legal Counsel, where you’ll take the lead on navigating and overseeing a complex regulatory landscape. 

  

Reporting to the General Counsel, this dynamic role implements and maintains processes to ensure that the Company's business practices and decisions are in compliance with external regulatory requirements including the Coastal Ferry Act (CFA), the Coastal Ferry Services Contract (CFSC), federal and provincial Lobbying Acts, Federal and Provincial marine and transportation legislation, environmental legislation, freedom of information and privacy legislation and lobbying legislation, as well as the Company's internal governance policies. 

  

The Senior Regulatory Legal Counsel is a key member of the Company's legal team and provides timely and strategic advice to the organization regarding such regulatory compliance requirements and pro-actively develops and maintains a collaborative and effective relationship with the British Columbia Ferry Commission (BCFC) and other regulatory bodiesThis role is the key liaison with the BCFC and is responsible for preparing applications to, and delivering required reports and information to the BCFC.   

 

The Role 

At BC Ferries, the Senior Regulatory lawyer will provide sound and strategic legal guidance, advice and counsel to senior leaders in a variety of complex legal matters from different legal disciplines to support the Company’s long-term goals including: 

  • Regulatory law;  
  • Maritime law;  
  • Real property matters, including Crown land leases and licenses; 
  • Human rights claims at the BC Human Rights Tribunal;  
  • Oversight of external counsel in litigation matters (gathering evidence, analyzing facts, recommending settlement and strategy);  
  • Indigenous legal relations (communications, negotiations, involvement);  
  • Policy compliance;  
  • Freedom of information and privacy compliance; 
  • Environmental law; 
  • Occupational health and safety legislation; and 
  • Environment and safety incident investigations. 

 

In addition, this role is also responsible for advising on environmental and safety incident investigations and Crown land matters (i.e. leases and licenses of real property with the Crown).  The successful candidate will also provide strategic legal guidance to senior leadership that is practical and informed by a deep knowledge of the business to support the organization’s long-term operational and public-interest objectives. 

 

What you bring to the team 

If your experience includes a minimum of 8 years of legal experience; with at least 5 years focusing on regulatory law, we would be interested in connecting. Some experience as in-house counsel would be considered an asset but not required.

Additional information 

The target salary range$132,600-$198,800 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis. As this is a newly created role with a high level of complexity, the salary range appropriately reflects its scope and impact.
