Job Description

TRAINING DEVELOPMENT LEAD

Fleet Renewal

Victoria

The Opportunity

In order to address the challenges brought on by constrained system capacity, aging major assets, and environmental sustainability, BC Ferries has recently launched a new Fleet Renewal organization that will see a large number of new major and minor vessels introduced to the fleet in the near term as well as significant builds and upgrades to shore-based infrastructure and facilities.  These projects together form the largest capital investment in the company’s history.

Reporting to the Director, People & Safety Fleet Renewal, the Training Development Lead (TDL) leads the design, development, and implementation of training required to bring Fleet Renewal (FR) assets into service.  Serving as the program’s resident expert in training and education, the TDL applies a systematic, end to end approach to analyzing learning needs, developing training solutions, and ensuring high quality delivery across classroom, shipboard, and simulator environments.  The role supports FR program managers by creating and coordinating learning resources and by assessing all company-wide training requirements to ensure personnel are fully prepared to operate and maintain new vessels.  The TDL ensures quality standards, alignment with FR objectives, and readiness across the workforce.

The Role

Reporting to the Director, People & Safety Fleet Renewal, this role is integral to the achievement of company objectives, and you contribute value through key areas of oversight such as:

  • Guiding the creation, management and delivery of training solutions necessary for the successful introduction-to-service of FR assets. Implementing a holistic, comprehensive, and systemic approach to all training and education.
  • Within the FR team, serving as a subject matter expert in training, education, and professional development programs.
  • Responsible for ensuring quality control of training, which includes guiding the development, management and provision of training solutions to ensure that they meet FR requirements.
  • Analyzing operational job performance requirements, identifying organizational needs and suggesting and facilitating solutions to ensure employees are overall ready to operate and maintain the new vessels in operation.
  • Exploring feasibility of a variety of training and education delivery mechanisms with the agility to be used in shore-based and shipboard environments as well as within simulated settings.
  • Working in partnership with the organization's enterprise learning function to facilitate development of materials and approaches consistent with corporate training methodology.

What you bring to the team

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Education, Adult Learning, Training Development, or related discipline
  • 6+ years combined experience in any of the following areas:
    • Design/development of training programs and/or instructional systems design.
    • Experience working as a Learning Specialist, Learning Instructional Designer, E-Learning Specialist, or Education & Training Specialist.
    • Experience with Adult Learning and Training.
  • A combination of relevant experience and education may be considered.
