Job Description

MAINTENANCE ENGINEER, TERMINAL MAINTENANCE

Nanaimo, Sidney, Comox, Horseshoe Bay or Tsawwassen

The Opportunity

Join BC Ferries and help keep coastal communities connected!

As Terminal Maintenance Engineering expands to provide technical expertise to the company, we are looking for a senior or intermediate Structural Engineer to join the team. This is an opportunity to provide your skills and knowledge to make a significant impact to the safe and reliable operation, maintenance, and design of our terminal infrastructure.

How You Will Make a Difference

As a Maintenance Engineer, you will provide technical leadership within the company. You will work collaboratively with leaders from all Terminal Engineering departments (Terminal Maintenance, Terminal Construction, and Asset Services) and be responsible for providing technical oversight, expertise, and guidance.

Through overseeing and leading inspection work and managing inspection findings, you will be a subject matter expert for the condition of our terminal assets. Your recommendations will be critical for short and long-term strategic planning.

Through completing technical reviews of designs and reports, you will guide the overall department toward solutions that meet the corporate safety, reliability, and maintainability requirements while also meeting industry best practice and regulatory requirements.

You will support departmental objectives by leading various technical programs, authoring technical documents, and providing technical oversight to the broader Terminal Engineering group and other interest-holders within the company.

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Maintenance Engineering, the Maintenance Engineer is responsible for providing technical oversight, expertise, and guidance to the Terminal Engineering Department for all terminal infrastructure (marine and uplands). This position is for a talented person that ideally has experience in the Marine Structural or Bridge Engineering fields and wants to make a significant impact to the operation and delivery of safe and reliable infrastructure.

Some of your responsibilities will be to:

  • Oversee the condition inspection program which includes a yearly consultant-led inspection at every terminal.
  • Conduct code and regulatory reviews to establish company compliance.
  • Participate in, or lead, incident response and investigation for emergent situations.
  • Provide guidance for maintenance workflow prioritization.
  • Represent the Project Owner by providing recommendations for timing and prioritization of condition-based projects within the capital portfolio.
  • Management of the company’s asset health program
  • Create and revise technical standards, manuals, and guidance documents
  • Develop and provide training in the use of standards and technical/guidance documents
  • Complete technical reviews of designs, drawings, reports, and strategies to ensure safety, reliability, maintainability, quality, and standardization while considering department objectives and the strategic goals of the company.
  • Provide technical oversight and promote accountability throughout Terminal Engineering to ensure recommended corrective actions are validated, documented, and executed as required.

The Ideal Candidate

  • You are a problem solver that knows how to take initiative and think outside the box. With an unwavering commitment to safety and reliability, you have a strong sense of ownership for your assignments.
  • You show effective leadership skills in how you work and communicate with others.
  • You bring a positive and honest attitude to the team and are a strong collaborator that is comfortable giving and receiving respectful feedback.
  • You are detail oriented in your approach and have the strength of character to lead technical reviews, discussions, and decision making; both with internal groups and external professionals.
  • You prioritise making the right decision, not the easy one, based on sound engineering judgment. You hold your commitment to public safety to the highest standard and can articulate the reasons for your decisions accurately and honestly.

Work Requirements

This opportunity requires travel to terminals and site offices; from Victoria to Prince Rupert. This may include overnight stays, work in all weather conditions, work at heights and out of a boat. At times, long days at the office may be required to meet the operational needs of the company.

What you bring to the team

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Structural, Civil, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline
  • Registered, or eligible to be registered, as a Professional Engineer with EGBC
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive engineering experience with a background in some of the following: design consulting, structural inspections, load ratings, technical writing, maintenance engineering, and project engineering
  • Experience in the Marine Structural or Bridge Engineering fields is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Working knowledge of relevant standards, codes, bylaws, and regulations for bridge and marine structures
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficiency using standard business applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerBI, etc.)
  • Valid Class 5 drivers’ licence and willingness to travel throughout coastal BC, including multi-day assignments on occasion
  • Must be articulate in spoken and written English and able to communicate technical and business information clearly
