Job Description

PROJECT MATERIAL MANAGER

Fleet Renewal

Victoria

The Opportunity

In order to address the challenges brought on by constrained system capacity, aging major assets, and environmental sustainability, BC Ferries has recently launched a new Fleet Renewal organization that will see a large number of new major and minor vessels introduced to the fleet in the near term as well as significant builds and upgrades to shore-based infrastructure and facilities.  These projects together form the largest capital investment in the company’s history.

The Project Material Manager is responsible for ensuring that all materials, parts, and equipment required to support new vessels, as well as vessel and terminal upgrades within the Fleet Renewal scope are identified, documented, registered, and available where and when needed. This position plays a critical role in ensuring onboarding of new inventory items into BC Ferries' inventory management system (Maximo), establishing storerooms in the Maximo system for new build vessels, and designing optimal storage strategies (onboard, centralized warehouse, or vendor-held) for all Fleet Renewal projects. This includes future-planning for as-yet-unordered parts, working cross-functionally both internally with Engineering, Supply Chain, and Fleet Renewal and externally with contracted builders and original equipment manufacturers to ensure material readiness across the lifecycle of Fleet Renewal projects.

The Role

Reporting to the Director, Procurement & Commercial, this role is integral to the achievement of company objectives, and you contribute value through key areas of oversight such as:

  • Collaborating with Engineering, Operations, and Original Equipment Manufacturers to determine the strategic sparing concept including which parts should be held onboard, stored in a central warehouse, or vendor-managed and ordered on demand;
  • Overseeing and directing the identification and onboarding of new spare parts, special tool, and test equipment requirements for new vessel and terminal infrastructure programs;
  • Acting as a subject matter expert that provides strategic recommendations of onboard vessel storeroom set up for new vessel projects; assigning appropriate bin locations for new materials;
  • Directing assigned Supply Chain resources to ensure that the spaces allocated for storerooms are set up with required measures as per internal controls and inventory management policies;
  • Reviewing material management, inventory and sparing sections of the respective ship building and construction contracts, and the owner benefit and service agreements to support contract management by ensuring that the goods, services, and benefits agreed are delivered;
  • Maintaining the required confidentiality according to each contract and agreement;
  • Monitoring material procurement timelines and liaise with procurement teams to expedite critical orders, escalate risks to delivery schedules, and de-risk the transition to operations;
  • Supporting Corporate ILS/Asset Management/Material Management activities, representing Fleet Renewal with subject matter leadership expertise in the field;

What you bring to the team

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business, Engineering, or a technical related field
  • Minimum 7 years in material management, in a complex operational or marine/transportation environment
  • Experience working on or supporting large-scale capital projects such as new builds, conversions, or infrastructure upgrades
  • Experience using Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) or CMMS systems (Maximo preferred)
  • Familiarity with marine engineering components, electrical systems, and vendor/supplier coordination
