Job Description

HVAC/REFRIGERATION TECHNICIAN  

Nanaimo  

 

The Opportunity 

We are looking for a safety-minded individual responsible for servicing, maintainingtroubleshooting and repairing refrigeration, air-conditioning and related equipment to the highest standard throughout BC Ferries facilities.  

 

The Role 

Reporting to the Chargehand of Refrigeration, you will perform the following duties: 

 

  • Inspectingmaintaining, and repairing a wide variety of shipboard refrigeration, air-conditioningand related equipment, tracing system faults; diagnosing and replacing parts and components 
  • Troubleshooting system failures 
  • Acquiring necessary parts to service and repair defective equipment 
  • Documenting cause of malfunction, repairs made and parts used in the Computerized Maintenance Management System 
  • Troubleshooting and planning for future maintenance requirements; analyzing maintenance information and suggesting modification to maximize safety and minimize machinery failures 
  • Ordering and maintaining an inventory of spare parts and equipment; and ensuring availability for replacement during service calls 
  • Liaising with Operational Staff while undertaking tasks related to the position 
  • Performing additional duties including communicating with suppliers and vendors regarding parts and equipment 
  • Assisting Fleet Engineering and Project Management as required 
  • Working on both operational and non-operational vessels systems 
  • Providing orientation, guidance and informal training to other employees 

 

What you bring to the team 

Education:  

  • BC or Inter-Provincial HVAC/Refrigeration Trades Qualification 
  • Completion of an Environmental Awareness Course of Ozone Depleting Substances 
  • Valid BC Drivers Licence 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Basic knowledge of Worksafe regulations and safe working practices 
  • Basic knowledge of control systems 
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and regulations 
  • Ability to clearly and accurately convey technical information through sketches and drawings 
  • Ability to identify and prioritise work requirements 
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written 
  • Ability to access, research, analyze, interpret, and retrieve computerized information required to perform the job 
  • Ability to accurately record information in a concise, complete, and legible manner 
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Strong team orientation 
  • High level of self-motivation and initiative 
  • Ability to work well under pressure 
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships 

 

Experience:  

  • Apprenticeship or trades background in marine or industrial systems 
  • Background sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge and ability requirements of the job (background may include education, training, self-study, employment and other experience) 

 

Requirements after appointment:  

  • OSH-A and OSH-E courses 
  • Dangerous Goods Certificate 
  • Forklift Training 

 

Travel to off-site work locations is required.
