The Opportunity

BC Ferries is seeking a dynamic Senior Communications Advisor to join our high-performing team and help shape how we connect with customers, interest holders, and communities across British Columbia.

 

As a Senior Communications Advisor, you are a proven strategic communicator who blends storytelling with proactive media relations and issues management. You handle complex topics with clarity and confidence, build strong relationships and thrive under pressure. A self-starter and problem-solver, you bring a track record of delivering organization-wide communications, anticipating emerging issues, and working independently with limited supervision.

 

This position develops key materials such as news releases, reports, and presentations, supports special events, and plays a vital part in protecting and promoting the company’s reputation through proactive media relations and issues management. Acting as a corporate spokesperson and handling after-hours media requests, the advisor ensures swift responses to emerging issues, keeping communications clear, timely and aligned with corporate objectives.

 

The Role

Reporting to the Director, Media & Issues, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:

  • Drafting and developing communications strategies and plans for company-wide/corporate and internal communications to support special projects in various areas of the company;
  • Drafting and developing a variety of communications materials including communications strategies and plans, internal memos, intranet copy, presentations, reports, speeches, and correspondence;
  • Working independently and producing high-profile communications deliverables that require little revision;
  • Utilizing your knowledge and application of communications concepts, strategies and technical skills to plan, execute and evaluate communications plans for internal and external audiences.
  • Support proactive and reactive issues management, serving as a corporate spokesperson and ensuring timely, accurate responses to media and stakeholder inquiries.

 

What you bring to the team

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, public affairs, journalism or related discipline.
  • 4-6 years’ experience in a public relations or communications role with high visibility in the public eye. Candidates with established media connections (i.e., writers and reporters) are highly preferred.
  • 4-6 years’ experience coordinating day-to-day print and electronic communications services, including preparation of information materials, such as news releases, FAQs, presentations, speeches, briefing notes and media responses.
  • 4-6 years’ experience managing internal resources and contract suppliers.
  • 2-3 years’ experience as a corporate spokesperson considered an asset.
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and works collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to translate technical material and terminology into plain language for employee audiences.
  • Ability to manage projects and assignments on deadline.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

Additional information

The target salary range: $83,500 to $104,300 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity.
