Job Description

INTERIOR & OUTFITTING LEAD

FLEET RENEWAL

Victoria

The Opportunity

In order to address the challenges brought on by constrained system capacity, aging major assets, and environmental sustainability, BC Ferries has recently launched a new Fleet Renewal organization.  This team will deliver a large number of new major and minor vessels to the fleet in the near term, as well as significant builds and upgrades to shore-based infrastructure and facilities.  These projects together form the largest capital investment in the company’s history.

The Interior & Outfitting Lead will support the concept development, design, and construction of interior spaces for newbuild and refit ferry projects. The successful candidate will work closely with customer experience operations, naval architects, shipyard staff, vendors, and regulatory agencies. They will ensure that public service areas enhance the passenger experience and are functional, durable, accessible, and compliant with applicable standards. The role also supports the design of crew accommodation areas and technical spaces to create efficient layouts, design, and outfitting.

The Role

Reporting to the Director, Technical & Design, this role is integral to the achievement of company objectives, and you contribute value through key areas of oversight such as:

  • Developing engineering designs and specifications for ferry interiors including passenger lounges, washrooms, crew accommodations, galleys, retail spaces, control rooms, and accessible areas.
  • Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including Customer Experience, Catering & Retail Operations, Branding, and Safety to ensure operational requirements, service standards, and brand identity are integrated into interior design.
  • Translating functional requirements and user feedback into spatial layouts, material selections, and outfitting details that enhance the ferry travel experience for passengers and crew.
  • Developing technical drawings for interior and outfitting systems such as partitions, ceilings, doors, built-in furniture, lockers, signage, and accessories.
  • Specifying materials and finishes with a focus on marine environment durability, fire safety, acoustic performance, accessibility, and ease of maintenance.
  • Ensuring designs are compliant with requirements from SOLAS, IMO, Accessibility Standards Canada, Transport Canada, and classification society rules.
  • Coordinating the integration of interior and outfitting systems with other disciplines such as HVAC, piping, lighting, electrical, and structural, and marine systems engineering teams.
  • Working with supply chain professionals and suppliers to evaluate product quality and suitability.
  • Acting as the lead for mock-up reviews, onboard inspections, factory acceptance tests (FATs), and commissioning activities to verify production design and quality.
  • Contributing to change management, document management, and lessons learned processes.
  • Onsite presence requirement at an international shipyard for short to medium durations during ship construction phases.

What you bring to the team

  • Bachelor’s degree in naval architecture, marine engineering, interior design, industrial design, or a closely related discipline.
  • Diploma in marine systems, outfitting, or architectural technology combined with relevant shipyard experience may be considered.
  • 5-7 years of progressive experience in interior/outfitting engineering for ferries or other passenger vessels.
  • Professional Engineer (P. Eng) or Engineer-in-training (EIT) status is preferred.
