The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineering Manager, Electrical and Automation to support the Director, Naval Architecture in leading our electrical engineering team within the Fleet Technical group. As a critical part of the Fleet Technical Engineering team, you provide technical expertise on electrical power and automation systems for in-service vessels, refits, new construction, and capital projects.

 

You are also responsible for leading initiatives related to the management of Operational Technology and Cybersecurity, in collaboration with the Information Technology team. Supporting the People & Safety team with investigation and corrective actions relations to incidents and leading the electrical safety program.

 

The Role

Reporting the Director, Naval Architecture, you add value by key areas of oversight such as:

  • Managing an internal team and reviewing, conducting and assigning Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) for electrical and automation system;
  • Ensuring that ECR’s are actioned within acceptable service standards;
  • Providing theoretical, diagnostic, and forensic support to the line managers responsible for asset management of ships systems (Engineering Superintendents, Project Managers, Chief Engineers, and Fleet Support Unit);
  • Monitoring and reporting on compliance with relevant regulations and standards, with an emphasis on machinery and systems.
  • Participating in the development of the corporate Professional Practice Management Plan and continuing education requirements under EGBC Bylaws and Professional Governance Act (PGA);
  • Managing internal design development processes and directs contracted design work with the Engineering Services MSA;
  • Reviewing and authorizing the design prior to regulatory approval;
  • Providing expert technical advice to the Fleet Renewal Program, to capital projects and refits with the Fleet Project Management Office, and improvements on vessels with an emphasis on control systems and power management;
  • Responsible for technical review of specifications for contracted work during dry-docking or refit and as needed, the analysis of extras submitted by shipyards or contractors;
  • Providing support for development of contracts and engineering considerations related to legal processes;
  • Responsible for scope and quality inspections onboard vessels at shipyards and the Inspection of materials and equipment on suppliers' premises;
  • Supporting condition monitoring programs by establishing baselines and reviewing periodic results to identify anomalies and possible causes;
  • Directing staff and contractors in the preparation of detailed vessel condition reports, makes recommendations on refurbishment and ensures all records, documentation, and technical materials are in compliance with policies and regulations;
  • Providing engineering and process expertise to risk management processes and system safety advice;
  • Managing the development and implementation of the Electrical Safety Program;
  • Responsible for other Fleet Technical management functions such as budgeting, standards development, time management, performance reviews, maintenance relationships with suppliers and contractors.

 

What you bring to the team

  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree (minimum) in Electronic, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; with an emphasis on control systems and/or power management systems;
  • Licenced Professional Engineer;
  • Minimum 10 years of experience working with control systems and electronics, both theoretical and applied, preferably with some marine project references;
  • Postgraduate work towards a Master's Degree or Ph.D is preferred;
  • Excellent judgement and problem-solving skills, strong theoretical background, leadership skills, effective communicator particularly with operational staff;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of MS Office applications advanced Excel and Word;
  • Ability to create, introduce and/or recommend new ideas or processes into the workplace to improve the safety and quality of work thus increasing performance and productivity.

Additional information

The target salary range: $125,400 - $156,800 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity.
