The opportunity

As the Operations Manager, Commercial Services, you play a pivotal role in leading a dynamic team to optimize Commercial Services’ overall operations. You are responsible for fostering a positive work environment that encourages employee engagement, professional growth, and high performance. Your leadership involves setting clear goals, providing regular feedback, and recognizing the contributions of team members.  You support the Commercial team with employee relations, engagement, team development and performance management.

To be the right fit, you are innovative and results-oriented, and your goal is to optimize and grow BC Ferries’ Commercial Services business and revenue. Working closely with the Commercial Services team and Operations, you develop, market, sell and manage BC Ferries’ product and services to Commercial customer segments. You also play a key role in identifying emerging market trends, monitoring industry developments, and analyzing the competitive landscape to identify and unlock growth opportunities.

 

The Role

Reporting to the General Manager, you add value by key areas of oversight such as:

  • Managing and overseeing Commercial Services’ overall operations including the drop-trailer service;
  • Supporting the General Manager on the development and implementation of effective strategies, practices and programs focused on continuously improving the customer experience;
  • Developing strategies, initiatives, and tactics that enhance customer retention and satisfaction to ensure an exceptional experience across the entire Ferry system and network;
  • Actively engaging and collaborating with the Safety Department and Commercial Services team to ensure safety standards are maintained;
  • Coordinating with Terminal Maintenance and other key vendors to uphold maintenance schedules and facilitate key projects;
  • Assisting in the training, supervision, and evaluation of staff members to align employee performance with organizational objectives;
  • Ensuring maximum employee productivity while maintaining compliance with both provincial, and federal labour and transportation laws;
  • Ensuring that operations are carried out in a cost-effective, and efficient manner in alignment with company and regulatory standards;
  • Identifying and developing operational improvement opportunities based on customer trends, volume analysis and asset management;
  • Continuously monitoring through metrics and analytics in all aspects of the Commercial industry and competition;
  • Developing exceptional relationships with all stakeholders inclusive of Customers, Industry Associations and operating/staff departments;
  • Analyzing existing business procedures, outline improvement strategies, and oversee the implementation of business process improvements;
  • Supporting capital projects, including preparation and submission of business cases and reports;
  • Managing relationships and procurement processes with external partners to coordinate material, asset, and resource allocation in order to satisfy operational needs;

 

What you bring to the team

  • A bachelor’s Degree in Business, Operations Management, Logistics, Safety, or related discipline with considerable experience in operations management, safety or related experience
  • A master's Degree in in related discipline prefer
  • Proven track record of achievement, specifically in sales growth and business development, along with working knowledge of the commercial trucking industry and experience managing resources, logistics and analytics
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in a managerial role within the trucking industry
  • Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire a high performing team
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills, with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications

Additional information

The target salary range: $98,500 - $123,100 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity.
