TERMINAL OPERATIONS, SUPERINTENDENT

The Opportunity
A strong leader and agent for change, you will be responsible for providing the strategic leadership and direction for the operation and administration of the terminals within their assigned region. Provides input to and implements approved corporate strategies and is ultimately responsible for the long-term financial, budgetary and operating results of assigned business. units. Promotes good relations with community, government agencies, customers and union representatives. Participates in the conduct of labour negotiations and/or relations issues and grievances, administration processes and human resource activities:in accordance with corporate policies and guidelines.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director, Terminal Operations, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:
Ensures consistent high standards of safety at the terminal for passengers and employees and the public by:
- Providing a leadership role in overseeing new safety initiatives
- Setting the strategic direction for safe practices in the terminal operation for the customer and all terminal staff
- Participating in all consultation pertaining to safety, security and environmental issues at their respective terminals
- Ensuring all company assets located at the terminals are secure and security systems are functioning
- Managing the terminal response in the event of an emergency
- Setting strategic direction for terminal business activities
- Planning, developing and implementing strategy for operational management and development to meet agreed organisational performance plans within agreed budgets and timescales
- Developing a three (3) year business plan for entire operating region
- Developing initiatives to ensure optimum utilization of all land-based assets, with the assets, with the associated employees and functions, according to corporate policy and objectives
- Identifying and analysing business opportunities to increase enterprise value
- Liaising with other functional/departmental groups to ensure full integration of operational objectives, purposes and achievements
- Contributing to the evaluation and development of operational strategy and performance in cooperation with the executive team
- Overseeing and acting as the senior operations representative in the development of terminal master plans (within their assigned region)
Represents BC Ferries in fostering good community relations by:
- Liaising with community groups, local governments and speaking on behalf of the organization while attending Ferry Advisory Committee and other related meetings
- Managing and promoting activities. And events at the terminal which enhance relationships with customers
- Seeking opportunities to model excellence in customer service and coaching staff to deliver results
- Responding in a in a timely manner to escalated public/customer complaints and inquiries, seeking a customer friendly method of resolution and providing excellent customer service
- Providing input and insight on new and creative/innovative ideas to enhance traveling experience and customer satisfaction
Manages Human Resource activities by:
- Working with HR to develop strategic hiring practices to ensure adequate/quality staffing
- Making hiring decisions for Management-level staff at the terminals in a manner consistent with Company policies and procedures and with the support of Human Resources and Staffing Services
- Establishing clear performance plans for each subordinate, regularly evaluating and documenting performance
- Investigating and resolving grievances at Step 3
- Acting as mediator to resolve conflicts and differences of opinion
What you bring to the team?
Qualification
- Post-secondary degree in Business Administration (or related field)
- Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience managing a passenger transportation terminal, preferably marine transport
- Demonstrated experience in successfully creating and implementing effective strategic initiatives
- Experience leading both a unionized and non-unionized workforce
- Demonstrated experience in creating and managing large operating and capital budgets

Additional information
This is a regular, full-time position with a salary range of $121,800 to $152,200 per annum. The starting salary will be based on the successful candidate’s competencies, including but not limited to experience, education and performance, related to this role.
