Job Description

ENVIRONMENT ADVISOR

Victoria or Comox

 

The Opportunity

BC Ferries operates daily in land, sea and air habitats governed by international conventions, federal and provincial Acts, emerging national marine conservation areas, coastal management areas, and numerous local governments. As the Environment Advisor, you provide technical expertise, specialty advice and operational support for environmental management as it relates to BC Ferries. You support the Director, Environmental Sustainability to develop, implement and maintain BCF’s environmental programs, plans and policies.

 

The Role

Reporting to the Environment Manager, you add value by key areas of oversight:

 

Compliance Support:

  • Reviewing and advises on compliance with IMO, federal, provincial and municipal regulations, in the area of environmental protection, species at risk, spill preparedness and response, hazardous materials management, water management, wastewater treatment, air emissions, wildlife management, and waste management;
  • Completing regulatory monitoring and reporting requirements;
  • Acting as a point of contact for regulators with respect to BCF permits, compliance issues and audits;
  • Conducting regular audits to assess conformance to environmental regulations, standards, and identifies observations that require response;
  • Conducting environmental reviews and acts as the environmental technical lead for project proposals, environmental impact assessments, product purchases, vessel acquisition and disposal, terminal development and business cases for other business units within BCF;

 

Developing Policies and Systems:

  • Developing and advising environmental policy that ensure long-term corporate sustainable operations and viability that mitigate and protect BCF from present and future liabilities;
  • Supporting development and maintains the Environmental Standards Manual (ESM);
  • Support BC Ferries’ environmental certification for its terminals, vessels and shipyard by measuring and completing evaluations of environmental progress and trend in key performance indicators and meeting the requirements of external verifications;

 

Representing BCF Interests Externally:

  • Fostering BCF relationships with external parties including Port Authorities, working groups and committees, Responsible Organizations and class societies;
  • Acting as BCF liaison in addressing public enquiries and complaints related to environmental concerns;
  • Coordinating with public relations activities, communications and education plans involving environmental issues;

 

Providing Education:

  • Educating employees and managers on BCF’s environmental management; identifies concerns, policies and individual responsibilities towards environmental stewardship.
  • Assisting in developing delivery of environmental education and training programs throughout BCF;

 

Environmental Projects:

  • Acting as the environmental technical lead for BCF for environmental incidents, by providing specialized advice and recommendations to senior management and fulfilling any external reporting requirements;
  • Providing emergency support to environmental incidents;

 

What you bring to the team

You have working knowledge/understanding of environmental legislation, waste management, as well as environmental incident reporting and procedures. You conduct yourself professionally in all areas, are able to represent BC Ferries and maintain confidentiality. You have excellent communication and presentation skills, take initiative and have strong interpersonal skills. You are analytical, able to work independently and as part of a team, are self-motivated, have good judgment and actively seek opportunities for collaboration. You demonstrate strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, adapt quickly to new challenges, and consistently strive for excellence in a dynamic work environment.

 

You have a degree in Environmental Sciences including Environmental Engineering or closely related discipline.  You also bring minimum 3+ years of experience in environmental science/management. Experience in the marine industry is considered an asset.

Additional information

The target salary range: $64,300 - $84,400 per annum.  The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
