Job Description

ENVIRONMENT MANAGER

Victoria or Comox

 

The opportunity

BC Ferries operates daily in land, sea and air habitats governed by international conventions, federal and provincial Acts, emerging national marine conservation areas, coastal management areas, and numerous local governments. Environmental stewardship obligations are central to more than half the new maritime regulations coming in force in this decade. Sustainable development practice, including both technological change and the behavioural aspects of people and processes, must be exercised and continuously improved through measures and assessments.

 

As the Environment Manager, you are a vital and senior member of the Strategy & Planning team helping to drive change as we implement best practice in environment management.

 

The role

Reporting to the Director, Environmental Sustainability, you add value by key areas of oversight such as:

  • Planning, organizing and monitoring company compliance with environmental standards, policies and procedures;
  • Acting as an internal resource for divisional/operational Managers with regards to the Company’s environmental management policies;
  • Monitoring and conducting regular audits to ensure policies and practices are properly implemented throughout the Company;
  • Representing the company on environmental matters at regional and national forums;
  • Managing the application and implementation of all new and emerging legislation, regulations, and environmental policy and standards, including motivating commitment as required;
  • Monitoring environment performance of the company by collecting and analysing base line and trend data;
  • Educating and training managers, supervisors, and employees in general regarding the Company’s environmental concerns, policies and individual responsibilities towards environmental protection;
  • Ensuring legal and corporate reporting requirements of Incidents are met and recommending immediate and longer term actions to mitigate or prevent environmental incidents and impacts;
  • Developing and managing data reports in preparation for delivery of internal and external presentations;

 

What you bring to the team

You have a degree in Chemistry, Biology or Environmental Sciences including Environmental Engineering or closely related discipline. You bring minimum 5-7 years of relevant leadership experience within British Columbia. Experience in the marine industry is considered an asset.

Additional information

The target salary range: $95,600 - $119,500 per annum.  The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
