The Opportunity

At BC Ferries, our people are our most valuable asset. We are seeking a skilled and experienced Compensation Specialist to join our People & Safety team. As a subject matter expert in compensation, you are responsible for conducting compensation analysis for both exempt and bargaining unit positions. This role also involves reviewing job descriptions and qualifications, providing expert guidance on job evaluation and analysis, and analyzing market data through pay surveys and reports. You ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations, while also establishing, maintaining, and administering compensation systems.

 

The Role

Reporting to the Manager, Total Rewards, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:

  • Assisting with developing and implementing compensation strategies for both exempt and bargaining unit employees.
  • Supporting hiring managers by reviewing job descriptions, qualifications, and evaluation documentation.
  • Establishing internal job equity by evaluating and ranking jobs.
  • Participating in salary and labour market surveys and analyzes pay data to remain current on the market competitiveness of prevailing pay rates and benefits.
  • Maintaining pay structure by calculating pay grades and ranges.
  • Supporting compensation practices complying with current legislation (pay equity, human rights, etc.) and a diverse and inclusive work environment through internal pay equity.
  • Collecting and providing information in support of the collective bargaining process.
  • Gathering and analyzing pay data for compensation reports and providing support to the Manager, Total Rewards in the creation of those reports.
  • Supporting the review process with research conducted on corrective or alternative actions to resolve compensation-related problems.
  • Performing market analysis and compensation framework competitiveness analysis.
  • Conducting periodic audits and preparing reports.
  • Ensuring job descriptions and evaluation documentation are up to date in internal databases and making recommendations for improvements to processes.
  • Conducting ongoing research and analysis on emerging compensation trends, issues and best practices and recommending changes to compensation structures where needed.
  • Defining and maintaining success metrics for compensation.
  • Supporting the coordination of the various annual compensation review cycles.

 

What you bring to the team

You hold a degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field. You bring 2-5 years of experience in compensation, job architecture and broad-based compensation within large organizations.

 

You also have extensive experience with HRIS and database management, as well as advanced proficiency in MS Office, particularly Excel.  Certified Compensation Professional designation or in progress may be considered an asset. Strong quantitative and analytical skills, a service-oriented mindset, and a keen attention to detail are essential for success in this role.

Additional information

The target salary range: $102,200 - $127,700 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
