CLAIMS MANAGER & SENIOR RISK ADVISOR

The Opportunity

We are in search of a Claims Manager & Senior Risk Advisor who will work closely with the Director of Risk and Insurance and be responsible for supporting the delivery of BC Ferry Services Inc. Risk and Insurance related functions. This includes but is not limited to supporting the design, development, implementation, and support of corporate risk management programs. Your responsibilities also include participation in managing BC Ferries commercial insurance and self-insurance programs, managing third party and first part insurance claims (both self-insurance claims and commercial insurance claims), including information gathering from both internal and external parties, investigation, communication with claimants, and settlement decisions. 

 

You provide claims management supervision and training for the Risk Analyst position.  In addition, you support a variety of risk assessment initiatives including terminal and vessel inspections and participation in risk assessments at various levels. 

 

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Risk and Insurance, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:

  • Manage end-to-end accident liability and quantum investigations for incidents/claims at BCF terminals and on vessels, or involving BCF assets;
  • Responsible for day-to-day claims management (first party, third party, and recovery claims) including claims that are in litigation;
  • Provides legal support by assembling documentation for settlement action;
  • Develops and communicates claims related recommendations;
  • Maintains insurance claims workflow by routing claims. Initiates claim payments and associated claim fees (legal, HCCRA, ICBC);
  • Develop strategies for improving and implementing loss and injury prevention techniques/procedures;
  • Supervises and trains assigned support staff. Train and supervise the Risk Analyst position in the claims management function;
  • Work with the Director R&I to develop and implement practices to protect BCF through the use of risk management techniques and insurance products including supporting continuous improvement in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and proactive risk management education and support across the Company;
  • Support risk assessments at BCF terminals and on BCF Vessels to identify and communicate potential safety issues to support the company in ensuring high standards of loss prevention are maintained throughout the Company;
  • Effectively communicate with various internal departments in regards to investigations, claims, proactive risk management, and claim trends;
  • Review and provide standardized direction about insurance and indemnity provisions in all significant contracts to ensure there are acceptable risk management practices in place;
  • Collect underwriting data in support of policy renewals. Manage insurance renewal information, and assist with presentation material preparation and delivery;
  • Assist with reporting and administrative functions within the department.

 

What you bring to the team

You hold a bachelor’s degree - completion of Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field is an asset. Associate degree, diploma or certificate in Risk Management and/or Insurance is also an asset. You have 4-6 years of work experience that includes risk management, or claims management, data analysis, and reporting. 4-6 years of experience in one or more relevant fields such as insurance, risk management, finance, and marine operations is preferred. You have experience and knowledge of insurance principles, practices, coverage, and claims processing.

 

You have excellent people skills that provide the ability to collaborate and communicate within a team, cross-functionally with other teams, and with outside parties, positive attitude and willingness to take on new challenges including strong customer orientation, excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Additional information

The target salary range is $95,600 - $119,500. per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience, and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
