Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of implementing a structured approach to reliability engineering within BC Ferries.

RELIABILITY ENGINEER

Engineering Standards and Asset Services

Victoria or Vancouver, hybrid work model

 

Reporting to the Director of Engineering Standards and Asset Services, you will play  a key role in utilizing reliability engineering principles and techniques to drive improvement in the availability and reliability of vessel and terminal assets and help optimize asset life cycle performance.

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Leads the establishment and upkeep of asset reliability metrics and associated data analysis for vessel fleet and terminal assets for the purpose of supporting asset management lifecycle planning
  • Monitors reliability trends, performs detailed reliability studies and calculations of component and system reliabilities, and directs changes to data management practices as needed
  • Performs, maintains, or reviews a variety of analysis and modelling functions, such as: descriptive statistics, Weibull analysis, maintainability and availability, warranty, physics-of-failure modelling, Monte Carlo Simulation, optimization and decision models, Fault Tree Analysis, Reliability Block Diagrams, and tolerance analysis
  • Support maintenance and improvements of reliability engineering processes and related asset management documentation
  • Considers impact of costs on recommended action plans for avoiding/correcting problems during the design phase or remedial action for correcting reliability problems on installed equipment
  • Performs and/or facilitates root cause failure analysis (FMEAs), effects and severities, causes and occurrences, prevention and detection actions, and special characteristics to help prevent failures
  • Helps manage in-house consulting activities, advises and counsels personnel on a variety of complex processes supported by detailed lifecycle calculations and guided by cost-effective decisions and recommendations
  • Assists in the development of specifications and commissioning plans, detailed technical and work instructions, and the classification of asset and maintenance data
  • Advises Chief Engineers, Superintendents, and other stakeholders on decisions and necessary actions necessary to execute strategic reliability plans
  • Acts as a project manager for smaller scale, wide base reliability based projects; acting as a liaison between the project sponsor and the stakeholders; and
  • Other related duties as may be assigned from time to time

 

Requirements:

  • A post-second degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, Physics or an equivalent engineering degree
  • Licenced Professional Engineer, EIT, or eligibility to be licensed in the province
  • Reliability Engineer Certification (CRE) or a similar certificate
  • 3 + years of related experience in reliability engineering
  • Ability to use reliability engineering first principles to implement tools to monitor and improve reliability and performance of the assets
  • Ability to summarize data and analytics
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

 

Desired Experience:

  • Familiarization with computerized maintenance management system (IBM Maximo and Oracle)
  • Marine experience (vessel and/or land based terminal infrastructure)
  • Microsoft office with excel programming skills
  • Reliability software experience (Reliability Workbench, ReliaSoft, etc.)
  • Criticality/risk assessments and FMEA experience
